penthouse with garden
full home renovation
espai verd, valencia
To inhabit this penthouse is to inhabit a garden.
Located in Espai Verd, a brutalist landmark and one of Valencia's architectural icons, it was built over twenty-five years ago and remains a work ahead of its time. Everything about it responds to one fundamental decision: to place vegetation at the very core of the project.
The renovation of this duplex penthouse takes that premise further.
The intervention focuses on dissolving the boundaries between inside and out, intensifying the connection between the home and the vegetation that defines the building itself. An open plan organises the common areas around a double-height void that links both levels and reaches toward the garden through full-height, wall-to-wall openings.
The planting on both terraces is enhanced, understanding greenery not as ornament but as an active part of the living space. The garden becomes the focal point of every room. The building's cross-ventilation and optimised orientation help maximise sunlight and temper indoor temperatures.
Inside, the original elements are celebrated: the concrete of the monumental structure that supports the building's terraces and the sculptural metal staircase, which becomes a defining piece within the space. Against that bold framework, warm textures and materials are introduced in the furnishings and flooring, such as natural wood, providing contrast, warmth and comfort that balance the weight of brutalism.
The result is a home that does not impose itself on the building, but completes its original vision. Open, fluid, and deeply connected to this small oasis of nature in the city.
